Glenn Gould

(1932-1982)

A Canadian pianist celebrated for his profound and distinctive interpretations of classical music and renowned primarily for his performances of Johann Sebastian Bach's keyboard works, Gould's playing was marked by a remarkable technical precision and a unique articulative clarity. His approach to music was thoughtful and analytical, often accompanied by a desire to explore new audio technologies and recording techniques. Beyond the keyboard, Gould was an intellectual force, delving into broadcasting and writing to share his fervent ideas about music and art. His legacy endures not only through his recordings but also through his influence on the realms of classical performance and music appreciation worldwide.

Born in Toronto on September 25, 1932, to two musically-inclined parents, Glenn Gould learned to read music before he could read words. It was observed that he had perfect pitch at age 3. At age 10, he began attending the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto where he studied music theory and passed his final Conservatory exam at age 12. His reputation soared after his American debut in 1955 at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

In a career that spanned 40 years, Glenn Gould would go on to record 4 Grammy-winning albums and performances and was posthumously granted the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He was also a writer and broadcaster, and dablled in composing and conducting. He produced TV programs about classical music and was a prolific contributor to music journals.

Gould was also known for his eccentricities, ranging from his unorthodox musical interpretations and mannerisms at the keyboard to aspects of his lifestyle and behaviour. He disliked public performance, and stopped giving concerts at age 31 to concentrate on studio recording and media. He often hummed or sang while he played, and his audio engineers were not always able to exclude his voice from recordings. Gould claimed that his singing was unconscious and increased in proportion to his inability to produce his intended interpretation on a given piano.

"The justification of art is the internal combustion it ignites in the hearts of men and not its shallow, externalized, public manifestations. The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but is, rather, the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity."
